Succession Planning

Camden works in partnership with a client's senior leaders and human resources team to design a succession planning process that will fit the unique needs of the organization. Recognizing that different organizations have varying degrees of formality, structure and complexity, Camden brings flexible designs for identifying and developing the organization's most talented managers and leaders. Proactive planning in the present will ensure that the organization will have the leaders it needs in the future.

The Audience
Camden will work with the organization's executive team, senior leaders and human resources staff in the design of a succession and development planning process. In a typical engagement, Camden will work with:

  • The CEO and other senior executives in the design of the overall process and in determining their roles and responsibilities for driving the process
  • Individual leaders identified through the process as having high potential, or as candidates to succeed other senior leaders in mission-critical roles
  • Human resources staff, at all levels of the organization, to help them understand their role in supporting the process
The Camden Approach
Before recommending a specific approach, Camden will develop an understanding of the existing status of the client's succession and development planning process and related human resources systems, including: performance management, compensation and reward systems and executive and leadership development programs. Follow-on approaches might include any or all of the following:

  • Working with the senior executive team to formalize, structure or fine-tune the process
  • Facilitating a process to identify the critical skills required of future leaders
  • Introducing a process for evaluating the strengths, weaknesses and development needs of future leaders
  • Communicating to future leaders that they are part of the succession planning process
  • Mapping out the best course of action for developing the needed skills in each future leader
  • Providing coaching and support to individuals as they implement their developmental plans
