Rick Koonce

Richard (Rick) Koonce is a certified executive coach who has worked with executives
and teams in the United States, Asia, India, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.

His robust approach to executive coaching and team development is based on his
extensive experience as an organizational consultant, and as a keen observer of
organizational culture and leadership behavior for many years.

As a senior consultant to IBM Business Consulting and PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting for over ten years, Rick developed deep expertise in business transformation, change leadership, team building and organizational communications – topics often at the core of his executive coaching work today. He has also written extensively on leadership and teambuilding topics, and is co-author of Growing Leaders (ASTD, 2000.)

Rick’s coaching methodology involves a rigorous process of asking probing questions;generating self-reflection; building trust and rapport; and helping coachees develop clear (and measurable) coaching goals. Clear agreement is struck, early in each coaching engagement to align coaching goals with business or organizational strategy, and to address existing/emerging skills gaps or professional development priorities. As part of the coaching process, an “alignment meeting” occurs early in the
coaching engagement that involves the coach, coachee and the coachee’s direct supervisor. This meeting establishes a common framework of expectations and goals to come from the coaching engagement. As coaching proceeds, various coaching methods are employed, based on appropriateness, to accelerate and facilitate the coaching process, and to gauge progress. These include various self-inquiry exercises,
journaling, diagnostic interviews, and tools such as 360-degree feedback, the Wilson Learning Center’s Social Styles Matrix, and the Burke-Litwin Model of Change Management.

Rick focuses his executive/leadership coaching in the following areas:
• Change Leadership
• Team Building and Team Coaching
• Strategic Communications/Stakeholder Management
• Self-Awareness and Emotional Intelligence

Rick holds an M.A degree from Georgetown University and a B.A. degree from the College of William and Mary. He is a graduate of the AT&T National Sales School, and holds a Leadership Coaching Certificate from Georgetown University’s Center for Professional Development. He is a member of the International Coach Federation (ICF) and is certified to administer several leadership assessment instruments developed by the Center for Creative Leadership. He is also MBTI-qualified and FIRO-B qualified.
